‘Mythical, magical, timeless, transient and unforgettable. These are just a few of the words that have passed through Secret Village Festival attendees over the years.
Situated in the hidden gem of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, the town and its locals are as much a part of the festival as any of the acts playing. Barra O Flanniagh and Mick Roddy founded the festival four years ago when they wanted to bring some life back into the village and they’ve done a phenomenal job in creating a little pocket universe of music, freedom, artistic expression, natural spiritualism and mysticism.
The festival itself takes place over the second weekend in August in the most atmospheric natural setting you could imagine; yes, that’s right: the whole festival and all it’s wonders take place in the forest behind the town. Surrounded by trees, conveniently sheltered from rainfall and located only five minutes walk from all the town’s amenities.
The lineup is something to be marveled at in today’s media dominated culture, as all acts are hand picked by Barra and Mick based on one paramount criteria: can you put on a show?
This laborious selection process has resulted in an eclectic mix of almost 100% unsigned Irish acts with genres ranging from mainstream pop and folk to the more underground, urban sounds of hip-hop, grunge and fusion.
Traditional Crafts village with workshops to suit young & old from Blacksmithing to Pottering, Mud Sculpting to Mask-making, Djembe drumming to West African Dancing and All Kids under 12 go FREE.
Each year the festival has expanded its attendance and it’s level of magic had by all there. Just keep it on the quiet hey;-)
